News

November 8, 2008

This morning, we learned of the passing of one of
our friends, the immensely talented photographer,
Mike Hurd. We met Mikey many years ago through
a mutual friend. His warmth, humor and artistic
abilities stood out among all the people we knew
in Connecticut. Mikey ran a very successful photo-
graphy business in Bridgeport, CT for several years,
combining commercial shoots for major area corpor-
ations with more artistic sessions to satisfy his need
for a creative outlet.

Mike was always ready to kick back with his many
friends, enjoying a couple of pops and some tunes.
We always knew when he was in the room, because
the energy level would bump up a notch or two. It
would surprise no one to see Mikey up on a table top
or a chair, photographing a performer. I was always amazed that he was able to balance so easily...must have taken years of practice.

You'll notice photos of gigs in NYC and CT on my Gallery page. These are only a few of the hundreds of shots Mikey took of us over the years. I'll never forget one time we were photographing the piano trio Three Piano Three for their debut CD in 2002. Mikey took the guys up onto the train tracks in Fairfield CT and began shooting. Well, sure enough someone called the police, thinking that terrorists were about to blow up Metro North or something, and the guys had to scatter in a hurry! We laugh about that to this day.

It's always hard to lose friends, but when they go at such a young age (48) as Mikey, it's doubly hard to take. I hope that you can join us in raising a glass to one of the most talented photographers we've ever known, Michael Hurd. Peace be with you, brother.

November 3, 2008

YIKES!!! I look at the calendar and see November up there...it's been over three months since I updated this page! Shame on me!! Well, let me get started, 'cause there's lots to talk about.

What could be more important than this month's election? Regardless of who your choice was, I hope you didn't neglect this opportunity to exercise your role in the election of our next president and vice president. As I write this, the campaigns are both furiously stating their last minute cases.

sometime next year. We have gigs lined up through the Winter, and are hoping to do some house parties, so fire off an email if you got sumpin cookin'.

Randy and I have been working in the
studio, doing some commercial production,
DVD soundtracks, and original tunes for
release down the road a bit. Studio reno-
vations proceed gradually, but we've been
working through it all and things are sound-
ing real fine. Expect to see some samples
of our stuff on the Music page here soon.

As Mono Malo rehearsed, we had the good
fortune of having a fourth member jump in,
funky bluesman Pete Bertolotti. His soulful
vocals, combined with the blues harp he
plays so well and the stinging Strat strung
over his shoulder add a new dimension to the already potent lineup. We'll have a cut from our demo up here in a couple of weeks.

Vagabond Van continues to roll through VT, with a bit of a timeout so Greg can visit his Southern and Midwestern haunts to promote his current release, "Rust Belt Vagabond". We expect to be back in the VT rooms come December.

the mailing list. Oh, and I'm actually following through with this MySpace stuff too. All these young whippersnappers have me using all these new fangled tools (yeah, like I know what I'm doing...sheesh!!)

Peace people!

SHRIMP TEES
Could this be the ultimate  fashion statement?  Probably not, but
ya gotta have one anyway!  You can order from the "Shrimp Stuff" page on this site.

Musically, things continue to evolve and new combos step forward. One of the most exciting is the partnership I have developed with phenom bassman Tom Bianchi of Somerville MA. Together, we are the bass & drum duo sometimes referred to as The Funky Crustaceans. This is a vehicle for both our original tunes, as well as lots of select cover things from the past 40 years.

Tom recently spent a couple of days in Hardwick at B.U.M.P., recording drum tracks for his next CD, due out
I've had the distinct pleasure of performing as a duo with some of my favorite musicians, including silky smooth, mega funkster Mitch Barron on bass, incendiary fiddler Doug Reid, soon-to-be-Mom Abby Jenne, and "Never A Bad Hair Day" accordionist Tim Lang. Monthly gigs at Main Street Grill in  Montpelier and The Bee's Knees in Morrisville are nights which I always enjoy. Slightly different takes on some familiar old tunes. We do have fun!
